New Year, New Challenge

Writer's picture: Casey WhiteCasey White

With the new year here, I find that it’s a good time to take a step back and reflect on the ups, the downs, and everything in between. These are all moments that have shaped who we are today. For me, last year was a big one. (seems like I say that every year) I tried to focus on my mental health, set goals, spend as much time outdoors as possible, and challenged myself to grow. Not all of that is easy or even fun sometimes but the new year gives me a chance to look at where I’ve been and figure out how to keep getting better.

Setting Goals

I love making goals. The start of a new year helps me focus on what I want to accomplish in the next few months or over the next year. Some goals might feel out of reach at first, but I’ve learned that if I keep pushing, they become possible. Without goals, there’s nothing to work toward.

For D2R, my goals this year are to..

  • Become more capable as a leader and mentor

  • Reach more Veterans and get more people involved

  • Raise funds to support our mission

  • Add a backpacking trip to our lineup

  • Bring new team members on board

Personally, I have a big life change coming this summer, and I know it will difficult to stay focused on what’s ahead. Setting clear goals helps me stay on track and keeps me moving forward.

Mental & physical Health

Taking care of my mental health is one of the biggest reasons I started Disconnect to Reconnect. PTSD, anxiety, and depression don’t just disappear after one hike or bike ride. It takes effort and consistency. Getting outside and resetting has helped me more than I can say, but I also know it’s not always easy. Lately, I’ve been struggling with pain from a back injury, and it’s made everything harder. I know a lot of Veterans deal with something similar, wondering if the pain will ever stop or if this is just the way things will be. It can feel like a roadblock to getting out and doing things.

I bring this up because I want anyone who feels like something is holding them back, to know they’re not alone and you don’t have to go through hard things alone. If you’ve been on the fence about joining a D2R event because of whatever challenge you’re facing, I encourage you to take that first step. We’ll figure it out together.

Let's make this year count

Last year was incredible, but I know 2025 is going to be even better. Whether it’s through D2R events, personal challenges, or just making more time to get outside, I’m excited for what’s ahead. Let’s keep growing, keep pushing ourselves, and keep showing up for each other. Maybe that means coming to a D2R trip, or maybe it means finding time on your own to get outside. Either way, I know it makes a huge difference.

I challenge you to take a few minutes and write down some goals for yourself this year. They don’t have to be huge, just something to work toward. And if you feel like sharing, drop your goals in the comments below. Let’s push each other to make this year count.
